The economic downturn noted by the market research institutes is also reflected in Germany’s producer prices for commercial wood products in March and April. While a clear upward trend compared to the same month of the previous year was recorded in February, it is crumbling in March, and eleven of the 26 wood products are already below the previous year’s level in April.
In the short-term comparison with the respective previous month, half of the values are on the red. There are also some values that are stagnating.
In March, only six out of 26 wood products had negative signs compared to the same month last year. Raw chipboard’s prices dropped the most, followed by MDF boards and timber. In other words, twenty values are still above the price level of the same month of the previous year. The strongest gains since March 2018 were from melamine-coated chipboards, followed by OSB boards, pellets and narrow boards.
In April, eleven of 26 values had already fallen below the previous year’s level, the most noticeable being raw chipboard and MDF boards, followed by wood chips and lumber. 15 values are still positive in April, most noticeably OSB boards and melamine-coated chipboard, followed by strips, windows and doors.
In the short-term comparison, eleven values have yielded. In March, the values for MDF boards and lumber fell the most compared to February. Above all, OSB boards and strips were able to increase.
