Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro wants to create an “Amazon Council” to protect and ensure the “sustainable development” of the world’s largest rainforest.
The announcement is commonly interpreted as a response to strong criticism of its environmental policy. So far, the region’s economic development has been a priority and there has been a remarkably high number of fires in recent months.
The Amazon Council is said to be headed by Brazilian Vice President Hamilton Mourao, Bolsonaro recently tweeted. He would coordinate various protection and development actions in all ministries.
