According to statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency, stocks of coniferous sawlogs, pulpwood and chips in Sweden are estimated to have reached 10.6 million cubic metres as of March 31, 2020. This is an increase of 5 percent since the same date last year.
It is mainly the stocks of pulpwood that are unusually large. During the winter, pulpwood stocks have increased to a total of 6.1 million cubic metres, which is 13 percent more than 31 of March 2019. Of this, 4.5 million cubic metres were softwood pulpwood, which was 23 percent more than in 2019. Stocks of pulpwood of spruce and hardwood were 0.8 million and 0.9 million cubic metres respectively.
Nearly half of the pulpwood stocks were in the north of the country, in timber balance area 1. It is also there that the increase has been greatest with 28 percent larger stocks this year compared to the same date last year. In timber balance area 3, timber stocks were 11 percent lower this year.
The stocks of softwood sawlogs have also increased slightly since the end of 2019, amounting to 3.5 million cubic metres. Compared to the same date last year, however, there is a decrease of 6 percent.
Stocks of chips are estimated to have reached just under 1 million cubic metres, which is in line with stocks in 2019.
